A CASE AGAINST PREDATORY RECORD LABELS AND THE FUTURE OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY

Why do some of us carry the belief that there is one certain arbitrary way to release music? Music is art and art knows no rules.

Personally, I consider myself a musical storyteller. I want my music to feel like a film or a well-directed TV show - which you cannot wait to watch and then eagerly wait for the next episode/storyline. Of course, the art itself must be great enough for me to make such a demand on the listener.

But this is where I think labels restrict an artist’s expression. What if I want to craft a totally different story by altering the release order and dates in such a way where one song leads to another then another or a single leads to an EP which leads to an album? This adds a completely different dynamic to the art.

My underlying question is, why do we as independent artists allow labels to have such a hold on us? Signing to a label will be a thing of the past. I promise you. The future is middle-entity free. Just like finance and crypto. Focus on your skills and eventually, we will break free from these chains.

I think as artists and creatives we need to ask these questions and then find or create ways to distribute our art without the corporate greasy fingers of a middle-entity interfering with it.
